The Klise sisters get an "A" for creative wit in these fun, clever stories communicated via memos, letters and news clippings. The reader gets lots of wordplay to help solve a little mystery in a very entertaining and intelligent fashion.
It is the subject matter that gets a "C" in some of the editions. For instance, in Regarding the Sink, Eastern philosophy is introduced and it may be helpful for some parents to be prepared to discuss this with their kids.
Here is one quote as an example:
Here is one quote as an example:
"One of the goals of feng shui is to maximize the beneficial movement of Chi-the universal life force present in all things."
Families who believe people are people and rocks are rocks will want to respectfully de-program such a statement.
While I did not read Regarding the Bathrooms, you can be sure there will be some potty humor in it, given the punny focus of the other books! For the most part, however, we can appreciate these books for their wit and challenging word use, not being overly concerned with any permanent effect on our kids. It is certainly a literary step up from Diary of a Wimpy Kid!
The Klise duo has penned another series dealing with ghostly adventures, which may lead families to a separate conclusion. The 43 Old Cemetery Road series (Dying to Meet You, Over My Dead Body, Til Death Do Us Bark, Phantom of the Post Office) may be reviewed some time in the future.
